What Is T+2 and Why It Affects Your Trading Strategy

When first getting started with Vietnamese stock investing, many people encounter an frustrating situation: they've just sold shares but the funds haven't arrived yet, so they can't immediately buy other stocks. This is a consequence of the T+2 rule — and understanding it will change how you plan your trades.

What Is T+2 and Why It Affects Your Trading Strategy

What Does T+2 Mean?

T+2 is the securities settlement rule. T is the trade date, and +2 means that settlement and transfer of ownership are completed two business days later.

When you buy shares today (T), the shares arrive in your account on T+2. When you sell today, the funds arrive on T+2. During that waiting period, you cannot withdraw the money or use it to purchase other securities — unless you use your broker's advance-on-sale feature, which carries a fee.

It's worth noting that if you only have one buy order, tracking the T+2 date is straightforward. But when you're managing 10–15 orders spread across multiple sessions, with each lot of shares settling on a different timeline, pinpointing exactly how many shares are available to sell becomes a cumbersome bookkeeping exercise.

Impact on Your Portfolio

For long-term buy-and-hold investors, T+2 has little practical impact. But for more active traders, there are two key issues to watch:

1. Capital Turnover Gets Blocked

If you want to sell stock A to capture an opportunity in stock B that's emerging right now, you can't use the proceeds from selling A immediately. You need to have cash already sitting in your account, wait two days, or pay a fee to advance your sale proceeds. This demands clearer liquidity planning — you can't wait until the moment you want to buy to figure out whether you have the funds.

Additionally, during sharp market selloffs, many investors want to exit quickly but find themselves stuck because they bought the day before and the shares haven't settled into their account yet, making them unsellable.

2. Costs from Rushed Orders

The pressure of locked-up capital tends to drive two emotionally-charged behaviors:

  • Buying earlier than planned just to catch the T+ window.
  • Selling hastily the moment shares settle, out of fear of missing the exit.

Both types of orders are generated by settlement-timing pressure rather than technical signals or valuation. The result: you rack up transaction costs on decisions that lack precision.

Take a Proactive Approach to Investment Planning

Rather than passively enduring the regulation, you can proactively incorporate Vietnam's T+2 settlement cycle into your risk management framework with two principles:

  • Allocate capital in sync with settlement cycles: Always keep a portion of free cash available to preserve your ability to react over the next two sessions.

  • Size positions based on lockup risk: Calculate order size based on the maximum loss that could occur during 1.5 locked sessions, rather than a theoretical stop-loss level.

Unlike manually buying and holding, Alpha Stock VN scores and ranks tickers in the VN30/VN100 universe using a multi-factor system, prioritizing stocks with strong institutional money flow, while using VN30F1M futures contracts to trade both sides of the market or hedge during downturns.

How Does Alpha Stock VN Work?

Instead of spending your own time researching hundreds of stocks, reading financial reports, and sitting glued to the screen waiting to place orders, you simply subscribe to AlphaSet's service and connect it to your DNSE account. The entire analysis and order-execution process is then carried out automatically by the system, directly within your own account.

AlphaSet's algorithm scores and ranks tickers in the VN30/VN100 universe based on four signal groups: technical, fundamental factors, foreign institutional money flow, and market sentiment. From that ranking, a single capital allocator splits funds between two sleeves:

  • Equities: Buys only the strongest-ranked stocks, trading on a T+1.5 settlement cycle.
  • VN30F1M Derivatives: Goes long or short based on trend direction, with approximately 5.4× leverage. For derivatives trading, the engine combines trend signals and technical signals to determine when to go long and when to go short.

Every decision is data-driven, every position has a predefined stop-loss, and execution is fully automated — unaffected by emotion or market rumors during volatile periods. The goal isn't to beat the market in every single session, but to consistently accumulate alpha (excess returns above the market) across multiple cycles — something the vast majority of individual investors trading manually struggle to achieve.

Your assets remain yours. Funds always stay in your own brokerage account; AlphaSet has no authority to withdraw or transfer them. The authorization only permits order placement, and you can revoke it at any time directly within the account management app.
