What Are Bluechip Stocks and Why They Aren't Always Safe
"Buy bluechips for safety" is the most common advice in Vietnam's stock investment community. And most of the time, it's not wrong. But understanding what bluechip stocks actually are — and where the limits of that "safety" lie — will help you make better decisions.

What Are Blue-Chip Stocks?
There is no official definition, but bluechip stocks are generally understood as shares of large companies with long operating histories, stable business performance, strong brands, and high liquidity on the exchange.
In Vietnam, most stocks in the VN30 index are classified as bluechips — primarily major banks, leading real estate firms, and several large state-owned enterprises. Examples include Vietcombank, BIDV, VietinBank, Vinhomes, and others.

Why Bluechip Stocks Aren't Always Safe
First, large market capitalization does not make a stock immune to market cycles. In 2022, many Vietnamese bluechips fell 40 to 60% from their peaks — including the largest banking and real estate stocks. Investors who bought bluechips believing they were "safe" still suffered heavy losses if they entered at the wrong time.
Second, blue-chip stocks have high liquidity, which means they are easy to buy — but also easy for institutions to dump. When large funds need to exit positions, they sell blue-chips first precisely because those are the most liquid, creating significant downward pressure in a short period.
Third, "safety" in investing does not mean "will not decline." It typically only means "low risk of bankruptcy." These are very different concepts when the market is in correction.

So What Should You Do With Bluechip Stocks?
The answer is not to avoid bluechips. The liquidity advantage of this group is genuinely valuable — especially for new investors — because you can always exit a position when needed.
The answer is to change how you select within that group.
Rather than holding a fixed list based on name recognition, evaluate periodically whether each ticker is strengthening or weakening relative to the other bluechips. A large-cap stock that has consistently underperformed the broader field for several months does not become safer simply because it is large.
Three questions you should ask at each review:
-
Is this stock stronger or weaker than the rest of the VN30 index over the past three months?
-
Is the current valuation high or low relative to its own historical range and relative to its sector peers?
-
Is institutional money flowing into or out of this stock?
These three questions are difficult because they require regularly updated data across dozens of tickers — and they require you to be willing to reduce your position in a familiar name when the numbers say so. That is the part where instinct usually wins.
Alpha Stock VN Trades Bluechips Systematically, Removing Emotion
What Is Alpha Stock VN?
Alpha Stock VN is a quantitative investment strategy for the Vietnamese stock market by AlphaSet — a quantitative investment platform built for individual investors.
The AlphaSet team has over 10 years of experience developing quantitative trading strategies, having managed $80 million for funds in Dubai, UAE, and processing a cumulative total of over $200 million in assets across multiple cycles with more than $10 billion in live trading volume since 2016.
AlphaSet serves traders ranging from professional to semi-professional, participating in digital asset markets (spot/futures/XAU) and the Vietnamese stock market — enabling individual users to trade automatically with impressive real-world APR results.

Users do not need to know how to code, do not need complex setup, and do not need to monitor charts continuously — yet can still trade effectively through AlphaSet. Simply connect AlphaSet to your brokerage account via API, select the AlphaStock strategy, and let the system trade automatically 24/7.
Unlike buying and holding on your own, Alpha Stock VN scores and ranks tickers within the VN30/VN100 index using a multi-factor system, prioritizing stocks with strong institutional money flow — while using VN30F1M futures contracts to trade in both directions or hedge during market downturns.
How Does Alpha Stock VN Work?
Instead of spending your own time researching hundreds of stocks, reading financial reports, and watching the market minute by minute to place orders, you simply subscribe to an AlphaSet plan and connect it to your DNSE account. The entire analysis and order execution process is then handled automatically by the system, directly within your account.

AlphaSet's algorithm scores and ranks tickers within the VN30/VN100 index based on four signal groups: technical analysis, fundamental factors, foreign institutional money flow, and market sentiment. From that ranking, a single capital allocator divides funds across two components:
- Underlying equities: Buys only the strongest tickers, trading on a T+1.5 settlement cycle
- VN30F1M derivatives: Goes long or short according to trend, with approximately 5.4× leverage. For derivatives trading, the engine combines trend signals and technical signals to determine when to go long and when to go short
Every decision is data-driven, every position has a predefined stop-loss, and all execution is automated — unaffected by emotion or rumor when the market moves. The goal is not to beat the market on any single session, but to consistently accumulate alpha (excess return above the market) across multiple cycles — something most individual investors trading manually find very difficult to achieve.
Your assets remain yours. Funds always stay in your own brokerage account; AlphaSet has no ability to withdraw or transfer them. The authorization only permits order placement, and you can revoke it at any time directly within the account management application.
